Automated handling of sensitive products
Sensitive pharmaceutical products, such as cell and gene therapy drugs, must be stored and packaged in extreme cold.
To ensure this, systems are required in which the drug vials are labeled fully automatically and packaged according to customer-specific requirements with the utmost care in the climate chamber.

Automated storage system for ultra-low temperatures
Together with our partner REFOLUTION, we presented the modular Densitiy Container Storage System (ULT HD) at the Achema 2024 trade fair in Frankfurt.
The ULT HD System was developed for the automated storage of goods at temperatures down to -80°C.
It can be installed in existing room-temperature storage facilities without any structural changes – temporarily or permanently.
Each ULT HD System is divided into three areas:
- Handling (filling and retrieval of the Storage)
- Storage (sequential)
- Cooling unit
A major advantage is that the “Handling” and “Storage” areas can be divided into different temperature zones: Handling down to -40°C and Storage down to -80°C.
The Handling System is redundant and therefore highly reliable. It fills the large storage area sequentially via sliding doors.
Additional ULT HD Systems can be docked horizontally and vertically via a temperature-controlled airlock system, making the system infinitely expandable.
The entire System is controlled by ACTERE automation software from KARING.

ACTERE – Software
The ACTERE software is a complete package for control in the pharmaceutical sector and many other industries. It is individually adaptable, user-friendly and enables simple control of complex systems.
ACTERE offers graphical programming of complex and parallel processes. Parallel processes can run concurrently or alternatively. This software uses Groovy as the scripting language. It offers open and extensive interfaces to the communication and I/O. The ACTERE enables measurement, documentation, assessment and analysis to be carried out online. All process steps are logged and traceable. The ACTERE is a software for controlling our actuators including various, predefined function modules with intelligent measurement data storage. Furthermore, this innovative software supports MDF.4 files. It offers flexible access control through individual assignment of rights to individual users and user groups.

Structure of the Software:
ACTERE is divided into system configuration and the project. The system configuration acts as the interface between hardware and software and handles the configuration of users or user groups and their system-wide permissions.
The system configuration includes:
– Users / user groups
– Assignment of system-wide permissions
– Hardware configuration and calibration
– Configuration of software-based emergency stop behavior
– Server configuration for remote control
The actual testing and control tasks are managed within the projects. Projects serve as the central entry point for creating and visualizing processes and user interfaces. ACTERE supports the simultaneous execution of multiple projects. A multi-door tester is a good example of this.
